ROE Visual's LED Brings Radiohead's Tour Design In the Round

Radiohead’s return to touring demanded a live production that matched the band’s instinct for reinvention. Working with a team of experienced live production specialists, the show was designed to evolve dynamically across 20 dates in five European cities, with Universal Pixels responsible for executing the ambitious touring concept.

Radiohead’s in-the-round tour design placed exceptional demands on the LED system, requiring high transparency, low weight, fast rigging, and absolute reliability in a fully live, non–timecoded environment. To meet these requirements, the screen design centred on a 12-sided cylindrical LED structure constructed using ROE Visual Vanish V8T touring panels, while ROE Strip was used to enhance the LED structure.

The LED system was engineered to operate as a dynamic, moving video surface. Individual screen sections could rise from stage level, rotate, and reconfigure throughout the performance, supporting multiple visual layouts without fixed cues or pre-rendered content. This required precise mechanical integration and stable panel performance under continuous movement.

High transparency and minimal visual obstruction were critical to maintaining uninterrupted sightlines in the 360-degree arena format. The panel design allowed camera feeds, lighting, and live-generated visuals to coexist without compromising visibility between the band and the audience. Consistent pixel alignment and colour reproduction were essential, as more than 20 simultaneous UHD camera feeds were displayed on screen at any given time.

The LED system was driven by Brompton processing with fibre-based distribution, enabling low-latency signal flow, accurate colour management, and rapid response to manual cueing. With all content generated live, the LED panels had to deliver predictable behaviour across constantly changing mappings and aspect ratios.

From load-in to show operation, the touring environment demanded robustness and efficiency. Panel weight, rigging speed, and mechanical stability were key factors in supporting repeated moves across multiple venues while maintaining consistent performance.

With all visuals generated live and driven by multiple UHD camera feeds, the LED system needed to respond instantly to creative decisions made in the moment. ROE Visual’s touring-proven panels provided the stability and precision required for this level of real-time performance, enabling the creative team to push boundaries without compromising reliability.

The result was a fully immersive 360-degree experience, one where the LED screens became an active, living element of the show, evolving night by night and reinforcing Radiohead’s commitment to reinvention through technology and design, flawlessly executed by the Universal Pixels crew.
