Debuting virtual production at Cannes Film Festival

ROE Visual and disguise join forces with Film Soho

Leek, The Netherlands (19 May 2022) - The 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will, for the very first time, host a virtual production space, made possible by Film Soho and powered by disguise, CVP and ROE Visual – marking a new milestone in virtual production’s expansion into the European film and television industry.

Talent-led film and television group Film Soho is partnering with virtual production innovators disguise, global Film and TV production solutions provider CVP and content studio ZOAN, and ROE Visual. Together, they showcase a state-of-the-art virtual production stage in the Grand Hotel in Cannes garden - hosting many of the Cannes Festival’s A-list participants.

Visitors will step into a virtual production volume, displayed on a LED volume by ROE Visual and powered by disguise and will become fully immersed in rich environments such as vast cityscapes and lush Icelandic country scenes - all designed in Unreal Engine and Notch. Visitors can drop by the space during the festival to receive demonstrations of the technology.

Powered by disguise’s award-winning extended reality (XR) workflow for virtual production, the stage is made possible with the support of industry-leading LED technology from ROE Visual, camera tracking from Ncam with CVP supporting on-camera and tracking system curation.

ROE Visual has brought its premium and much acclaimed LED product for film, the Black Pearl BP2V2, to Cannes, the same LED product deployed in film studios around the globe.

“ROE Visual is excited to support Film Soho and showcase the vast possibilities of virtual production at the Cannes Film Festival, together with its partners disguise and CVP. Bringing together the creative and the technical minds that represent the festival, the international filmmaking community and the industry-leading companies involved in virtual production technology”, states Auke Meijer, Operations & Sales Director for ROE Visual.

“We hope that by seeing these technologies up-close at the stage we have set up with Film Soho, filmmakers will get a taste of what the new film era will look like,” says disguise CEO Fernando Küfer.

Nick Hamson and Chris Greenhill, Founders of Film Soho, commented, “Film Soho are excited to launch at the end of this year, the first-ever virtual production stage in the heart of Soho. As a talent- and production led company, it made perfect sense to incorporate virtual production into our filmmaking offering. We are delighted to showcase this incredible technology to the international filmmaking community in Cannes.”
