BBC Sport and Future-Proof Media City Studios with a Strategic Investment in ROE Visual

Proven World Cup 2026 XR Solution Paves the Way for a Permanent Studio Installation

The Netherlands (09 Sept. 2026) — Building on a highly successful history of technical innovation, BBC Sport has announced a major infrastructure upgrade at its Media City hub service studio in Salford, investing in ROE Visual’s cutting-edge Ruby RB1.5 wall panels and Black Marble BM2 LED flooring. The acquisition marks a pivotal expansion of a long-term collaborative pipeline that includes graphics specialist AE Live, Megapixel, and ROE Visual, establishing a new benchmark for premium, high-stakes sports broadcasting.

The transition from traditional green-screen environments to advanced LED-powered Extended Reality (XR) volumes reflects a broader, permanent shift in the broadcast sector. Following their acclaimed technical execution during UEFA Euro 2024 and the massive, full-LED XR environment deployed for the FIFA World Cup 2026 coverage, BBC Sport and Media City are cementing this technology as the foundation for iconic programming, including Match of the Day.

Meeting the Demands of the Modern, Compact Studio

The decision to invest in the Ruby RB1.5 (1.5mm pixel pitch) and the Black Marble BM2 floor panels directly answers the physical and creative shifts occurring in studio design.

  • Shrinking Footprints, Maximized Impact:Modern studio trends favor smaller physical footprints, but they still need to deliver that big, immersive 'wow factor'. Surrounding a compact set with an intricate VR/XR environment allows production teams to deliver an incredibly vast, dynamic space out of a limited area.
  • Camera Proximity without Pixelation:In a smaller studio, cameras must inevitably operate close to the backdrop. To avoid visible pixelation or screen structure when captured at close range, there is a sweet spot where the 1.5 mm pitch of the Ruby series eliminates this barrier, providing a smooth, "video-like" environment. Presenters can stand directly against the screen while maintaining flawless visual integrity on camera.

To create a truly immersive look and feel in the studio, the investment extends to the studio floor where ROE Visual Black Marble BM2 LED panels are integrated. “Moving into a smaller studio space meant we needed a more creative approach to how we use LED,” explains John Murphy, BBC Sport Design Director. “For this permanent installation, the BM2 panels have been customized with a bespoke surface finish — a first for the glossy BM2 — developed in close collaboration with the ROE Visual team. By combining a premium XR technology backbone with set extension, high-end graphics and fast metadata exchange, we can create a much larger visual environment from a more compact footprint.

ROE Visual stood out from the start. It's not just about the panels — it's about the partnership. They understood our creative ambition, they were agile in developing the custom BM2 finish we needed, and they worked alongside us to engineer a workflow that delivers. That level of collaboration is rare in this industry.

The result is a studio that doesn't feel compact — it feels expansive, immersive, and completely future-proof. ROE Visual's agility and development expertise were key to making that concept work."

More technical challenges include:

  1. Moiré Patterns: When a digital camera sensor captures the grid pattern of an LED screen, it can create highly distracting moiré interference.
  2. Color Fidelity and HDR Consistency: Maintaining accurate color tracking and wide color gamut across physical elements, the LED floor, and virtual backdrops requires exceptionally precise processing, particularly when executing end-to-end High Dynamic Range (HDR) workflows.
  3. Camera Tracking and Sync: Seamlessly blending real-world camera movements with tracking solutions with real-time game-engine environments requires absolute synchronization and ultra-low latency.

Why ROE Visual Stands Alone: From UEFA 2024 to World Cup 2026

To combat these challenges, BBC Sport and content creator AE Live have consistently trusted ROE Visual. The brand’s premium performance was thoroughly proven during the UEFA Euro 2024 coverage, where the team successfully blended real-time XR elements and live scenery to earn widespread industry acclaim.

This trust was further realized in the current World Cup 2026 workflow, which powers an immersive virtual set using ROE Visual Ruby 1.9F LED walls, the BM2 LED floor, and Megapixel Helios processing, backed by the technical services of the FBR rental team and wrapped in an elegant physical set design by Jens Weber. After the World Cup 2026 broadcasts, the final Ruby RB1.5 will be installed.

“Supporting premium partners like BBC Sport and AE Live means understanding the creative ambition first, then engineering the workflow to deliver it on LED,” says Olaf Sperwer, Director Broadcast & Virtual Production at ROE Visual. “As AI-generated content becomes part of broadcast, the demands on processing and image quality are higher than ever. By choosing the Ruby RB1.5F alongside the Black Marble BM2, BBC Sport and Media City are addressing the core challenges of modern studio environments.

For the first time, the glossy BM2 has been deployed with a bespoke surface finish — a unique configuration developed at the specific request of leading BBC designer John Murphy. The design intent was to harness natural reflections from the floor surface to enrich the overall studio set design, particularly when paired with darker visual content.

This approach enhances depth and atmosphere within the XR environment, elevating the LED floor from a display surface to an active aesthetic element in the visual storytelling. Following our successful collaborations on UEFA Euro 2024 and the current World Cup pipelines, this investment solidifies a shared vision for the future of sports presentation.”

This long-term infrastructure investment ensures that whether production teams are bringing audiences home to Manchester or transporting them virtually to stadiums thousands of miles away, the visual presentation remains flawless, reliable, and fundamentally world-class.
